Historical background
EAROPH was originally formed as a Regional Chapter of the International Federation for Housing and Town Planning in 1954 - as it was then known - later changed to the International Federation for Housing and Planning (IFHP). The first EAROPH Secretariat was established in New Delhi, India, the location of the first ever EAROPH Regional Conference.
From 1960 to 1969, no EAROPH Regional Conferences were organised given the difficult climate of instability and conflict in East Asia. In 1970, Australia offered to host the 1970 IFHP Regional Conference, and this was accepted by the IFHP Council. Through collaboration with the EAROPH Secretariat in New Delhi and with the IFHP Secretariat in The Hague, and with funding from the Australian Government, Canberra hosted the 3rd EAROPH Congress in conjunction with the IFHP Regional Conference. Following a period of inactivity, this Congress enthused member countries in the EAROPH region.
In 1978, the EAROPH Secretariat moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. KC Leong became the first Secretary-General of EAROPH to be based in Malaysia. KC Leong and the Secretariat's initial development benefited from a close relationship with Professor Masahiko Honjo, then EAROPH President and Director at the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) in Nagoya, Japan. In 1980, EAROPH was declared an autonomous organisation, with a status equal to that of IFHP. Following this, IFHP and EAROPH became sister organisations.
The Australian Chapter of EAROPH was established in 2010. Currently, EAROPH has active chapters in Australia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. National chapters have translated EAROPH's regional objectives and activities into local contexts in each country.
The Secretariat continues to be hosted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. EAROPH is an international non-government organisation and non-profit body of professionals that is accredited to UN-ESCAP and UN-HABITAT.
Australia has hosted EAROPH World Congress events in Canberra (1970), Adelaide (1986, 2010), Melbourne (2004), and Newcastle (2018). Australia has also hosted an EAROPH Regional Conference in Darwin (1999).
